surfing in chile: Packing for a Chilean Surf Adventure
Excited for your first adventure in Chile? Whether you're a seasoned surfer or a curious beginner, packing the right gear is essential for a comfortable and enjoyable surfing trip.
Gear Rental or Bring Your Own?
This question is always a tricky one. As a general rule of thumb if you have a special surfboard and you’re travelling for over a week you might want to consider bringing it with you. Otherwise, the extra luggage fees and the risk of getting your favourite surfboard damaged are too high to be worth it.
Plus, if you're joining one of our surf trips, great news! Gear rental is included so no need to think about that one.
If you decide to bring your own equipment, here're our suggestions:
Wetsuit: we recommend a 2:3 wetsuit for Chilean waters at the time of our retreats (March, April and October, November). Or a 3:4 if you’re sensitive to cold or visit at any other time of the year.
Boots: While not necessary for our retreat locations, consider packing booties if you plan to surf elsewhere in Chile, especially in colder waters.
General packing
Beach Towel: A must-have for drying off after a surf session.
Swimwear: Pack a couple of suits to rotate while one dries.
Ear Plugs: Shield your ears from cold water and prevent surfer's ear.
Changing Robe/Towel: For privacy and warmth.
Flip Flops: Perfect for walking to the beach.
Day Bag: A wet bag is ideal for carrying wet gear after a session.
Yoga Mat: Bring your favourite mat for pre-surf stretches. I love this one for travelling, it’s super light and folds small.
Water Bottle: Stay hydrated, especially in the sun.
Adaptor: For charging your devices. In Chile, you’ll find two types: Type L and Type C. A travel adaptor should work for both types.
Reef-Safe Suncream and Lip Balm: Protect your skin from the strong Chilean sun. In Chile you can find this wonderful brand of sun protection products made locally
Hat: Shield your face and head from the sun.
Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the bright sun and wind.
Light Trousers: Comfortable for exploring and evenings.
Light Jacket: For windy days or cooler evenings.
Light tops, sundresses and shorts: during the day it can get quite hot in central Chile so bring comfortable and light clothing.
Walking Shoes: One of the things I love most about Chile is the amount of walking you can do. Towns and cities are pedestrian friendly and you can get to most places by foot, so bring a pair of trusted walking shoes for exploration.
Warm Hoodie: For chilly nights.
Noise Cancelling Earphones: For music but also to make the flight journey more pleasant. I swear they help prevent airplane ear and to sleep soundly.
Essential Travel Items:
Medical & Travel Insurance: Protect yourself from accidents and unexpected events.
Medications: Pack any necessary prescriptions.
Insect Repellent: Guard against pesky bugs. There are no dangerous insects in Chile, but if you’re sensitive to mosquito bites consider bringing an eco-friendly repellent. I love this eco-friendly soap to keep mosquitos at bay.
Good Book: Immerse yourself in Chilean literature. I love reading books where stories are based in the location I’m visiting. Chile has a plethora of good writers and there are plenty to choose from. Here are some of my favourites:
My Tender Matador by Pedro Lemebel - an icon, a defender of Queer rights and activism. One of the best writers in modern South American literature.
House of the Spirits and Ines of my Soul by Isabel Allende - no list of Chilean literature could miss this living legend. Her books often feature stories with strong female leads centred in often forgotten passages of history. A must read)
Bonsai by Alejandro Zambra - a very short novella like no other, original and mind-blowing.
Bumbag: Are SO popular in Chile! They’re one of the most practical ways to carry your belongings and keep them safe with you at all times. Here are some very cool options.
First Aid Kit: Be prepared for minor injuries.
With this packing list, you'll be well-equipped to make the most of your Chilean surf adventure. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and embrace the incredible waves and culture of this beautiful country.
